Snow Monkeys, Zenko-ji Temple and Sake Day Trip from Nagano
Starts at: Nagano Station or Hakuba
The Shinkansen turns a long road day into about 80 minutes each way. You can book the train and join a tour in Nagano, or let a private guide take you the whole way.
The short answer
The best bullet-train day trip to the snow monkeys for most people is to book the Shinkansen to Nagano yourself and join the Machinovate group tour at Nagano Station, which includes the park ticket, lunch, Zenko-ji and a sake tasting. The private tour by MY Travel Consulting takes care of the train and comes with a guide from Tokyo, at a far higher price and without reviews so far.
Pick the day you want to see the monkeys, or the first and last day of your trip. We look at the booking calendar of every tour from Tokyo, Nagano and the ski resorts and list the ones that still take bookings.
Starts at: Nagano Station or Hakuba
Starts at: Tokyo
Both options use the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano, the quickest way to the mountains. The difference is who carries the plan: you with a train ticket and a meeting point, or a guide who meets you in Tokyo.

Take the Shinkansen to Nagano Station, then a guided day with Zenko-ji, sake, lunch and the park ticket.
A group day trip that starts in Nagano, not in Tokyo. Pickup is at Nagano Station or, for skiers, at hotels in Hakuba. The day combines Zenko-ji temple in Nagano city, a sake tasting, lunch and the walk to the monkey pools at Jigokudani.
Guests coming from Tokyo take the Shinkansen to Nagano on their own; the train is not part of the tour.
Nagano Station, or hotel pickup in Hakuba (Happo area) for the Hakuba option.

Trains to Nagano leave from Tokyo Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen; the fastest take about 80 minutes. The JR Pass is valid on the line. Kagayaki, the fastest service, runs with reserved seats only, so on those trains you need a seat reservation even with a pass. For the outward journey, choose a train that leaves time to find the meeting point at Nagano Station. For the way back, pick one well after the planned end of the tour in the late afternoon: snow on the mountain roads can delay the return, and a missed reserved seat is your loss, not the operator's.
Once you are in Nagano, the Machinovate tour does the rest: transport to the trailhead with a guide, Zenko-ji temple, a sake tasting, lunch with a vegetarian option, and the park entrance. About three hours are planned around the park, according to an identical listing of the tour, which is more than the coach from Tokyo leaves. The inner sanctuary of Zenko-ji and anything else you eat cost extra. Two other tours start in Nagano as well, with Obuse or Shiga Kogen instead of sake; see the tours from Nagano Station.
MY Travel Consulting sells the only private day on this site that is built around the bullet train, about 12 hours from Tokyo. You do not have to read a Japanese timetable or find a meeting point, and the day is shaped around your group. Its listing does not state the group size or whether the park ticket is included, so ask before you book. It is new on the platform and the most expensive way to see the monkeys by a wide margin.
If the train and the meeting point feel like too much to organise, the H.I.S. coach from Shinjuku takes you there and back on one booking and includes the park ticket and lunch. You give up time for it: up to three and a half hours each way. All the ways from Tokyo.
About 80 minutes on the fastest trains of the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station.
Yes, the JR Pass covers the Shinkansen to Nagano. The fastest Kagayaki trains need a seat reservation.
No. The Machinovate tour starts at Nagano Station and the train is your own booking. Only the private tour by MY Travel Consulting is built around the train.
